Dog lovers gathered together to show off the running skill of their pets in a PAWS (Philippine Animal Welfare Society) event dubbed The Great Dog Dash: Year 3 at Eastwood City, Libis, Quezon City, last September 30.
The event featured small dogs rushing to their guardians who coaxed their wards with treats and toys at the end of the 10-meter race track. The fastest dog to reach the finish line in each round challenged the winner of the other batches until the grand champion emerged.
The challenge was divided into three categories: the Tinkerbell category, Elf category, and Hobbit category. The dogs in the Tinkerbell category were mostly teacup Chihuahuas, mini Pomeranians, and Yorkshire terriers. Short-legged dogs like dachshunds, small bassest hounds, corgis, small pugs, shih tzus, and poodle were grouped together in the Elf category, while the bigger dogs of the group sprinted under the Hobbit category.
To add more excitement, this year's race also featured a Celebrity Heat for the celebrities who came to show that their dogs also had what it takes to be a good runner.
Commercial model-disc jockey Hillary Isaac and Philippine Idol finalist Drae Ybañez hosted the event. Celebrities like R&B prince Jay-R, singer Karylle, actress Paola Peralejo, and master rapper Fancis Magalona with his family attended the affair with their lovable pets.
Karylle described how much fun the event was for her and her dog. Both were first-timers. She narrated, "We've been helping PAWS for the past three years, but it was usually through our participation in the Furry Tales Pet Fashion Show. Jack and I had fun this year because it's our first time to join a dog race. At the start, I think he was disoriented so I was so really proud of him when he finally crossed the finish line."
PAWS director Rich Ilustre explained that aside from raising funds, they also want their participants to enjoy themselves during the event. She said, "When organizing fundraisers, we make it a point that these are fun events that will allow purebreed dogs, mongrels and aspins (‘asong Pinoy' or native dogs) to bond with their guardians."
Meanwhile, PAWS invites dog lovers to its first charity dinner titled Dine with the Paws, which will be held at the Bonifacio High Street on October 20 at 7 p.m.
Celebrity friends and supporters of PAWS will perform during the main program.
Tickets are priced at P1,000 for persons attending without dogs, and P1,200 for guardians who bring their dogs. There will be a red carpet where dog owners and their pets can have their photos taken. A delicious buffet for guardians and a separate buffet for their pets awaits them.
